The Canadian government is bringing in a new set of occupational codes. The new version of NOC Classification will be known as NOC 2021, and it'll only take effect in early 2022. Statistics Canada announced a structural revision of the National Occupational Classification for 2021, a collaborative partnership between Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). In addition to reflecting changes in the economy and the nature of work as part of the 10-year revision cycle, this revision includes the overhaul of the "Skill Level" structure of the classification.

The new five-digit classification revision includes six groupings of categories called TEER, which represents the Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities of occupations in the Canadian labour market. The TEER, in conjunction with the broad groups of occupations, form the basis of the revised classification structure
The new 2021 classification's numbering system will be significantly modified as part of a major structural revision.
The NOC 2021 revision will overhaul the "Skill Level" structure by introducing a new categorization representing the degree of Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) required for an occupation.

The shift to the new National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 will have an effect on various Canadian government departments including Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The newly-announced standard calls for 5 digit codes instead of their existing 4 level system. This change means that TEERs - Training Education Experience Responsibility levels are now replacing NOC Skill levels from 0 through D with 6 different categories ranging from 0-6.* These higher numbers signify what type of training one has received in order to achieve this position.
